"No Square" was founded in July 1994 with Guillaume Perret on Saxophone, Stefan Aeby on Piano, André Hahne on Bass and Yannick Oppliger on Drums. The musiciens have created individually and collectively the original pieces found in their seven albums: "The Fly" (1996), "Green Apples" (1997), "Empreintes" (1999), "La Case à Chocs" (2000) and "C'est où Doregon" (2002), "Double Album Studio & Live" (2005) and "Le Pendu" (2008).
"No Square" as performed in numerous Clubs and Festivals.Over the last years they have toured in Germany playing in (Hambourg –Brême – Berlin –Dresden – Leipzig – Essen – Wuppertal – Frankfurt – München) Invited by Chucho Valdes at the international Havana Jazz Festival in 1998, the quartet represented Switzerland in Cuba and gave 3 concerts 17-18-19 December. « No Square » also played in Buenos Aires (Argentina) in March 2000, at the Cully Jazz Festival (Switzerland) in March 2001, in Punta del Este (Uruguay) and Buenos Aires in April 2001, at the Jazz Festival du Soleil (Switzerland) in June 2001, at the Mlode Kino Europjski festival in Torun (Poland) in April 2003, at the Schaffhausen Jazz Festival (Switzerland) in Mai 2003, at the Jazz Festival Hutwill ( Nov 03), at the Rhino Jazz Festival Rives de Gier (France) in October 2004 at the Jazz Festival Nancy Jazz No Square has produced with the Collectif Fa7 the music of « Roestigraben Box » (2003) (www.roestigraben-box.ch), the music of « Bitzius », a play in memory of Jeremias Gotthelf, the music of the play « La Voix Humaine » from Jean Cocteau in July 2004 and the music of “Les Jeux sont Faits!” in July 2006. The Collectif Fa7 in collaboration with “La Compagnie des voyages extraordinaires”are producing the new creation for september 2008 “RAME” at the Vidy Theater in Lausanne CD « Double Album Studio & Live» AltriSuoni 182 ....La forme physique sous laquelle se présente le Double Album, Studio & Live, matérialise par elle-même cette sédimentation en nous présentant deux étapes de sa progression. Le disque noir, une couche sombre et souterraine, documente la phase du travail en studio, la recherche de la composition, l'élaboration des formes et de l'arrangement, la resistance à l'immobilité et aux solutions toutes faites. Le deuxième disque, enregistré en public, est la magnifique réponse au questionnement que l'on devine dans la première partie. Rien ne paraît plus évident et plus aisé, plus communicateur et plus superbement réussi que cette musique. Ce courant marin nous embarque sans résistance possible ... Au point que l'on pourrait oublier le chemin parcouru... N'allons pas par quatre chemins justement. Mars 2006 Jazzmann Zum Anlass ihres zehnjährigen Jubiläums zogen sich die vier west Schweitzer Musiker für einen Monat in ein abgelengenes Haus zurück und erarbeiteten miteinander die Musik dieses neuen Doppelalbums. Das Ergebnis ist erstklassiger, origineller, frisch gespielter Jazz, der sich in erster Linie durch die gezielt eingesetzte Energie wohltuend vom schweizerischen Mittelmass abhebt. Die beiden CDs präsentieren das Quartett live und im Studio, wobei dabei nur ein einziges Stück ("Slow-Down") wiederholt wird. Die Kompositionen sind wahre musikalische Reisen und lassen den Hörer alle technischen Aspekte vergessen, was doch eines jeden Musikers Ziel sein sollte. Das Programm ist asgewogen und abwechslungsreich. Pianist Gabriel Zufferrey besticht mit einem wunderbar einfühlsamen Solo à la Bill Evans auf "Ju-Ju". Ein grandioses Album einer grandiosen Band. CD «C'est où Doregon» AltriSuoni 129After the CD «Live à La Case à Chocs», No Square, (formerly known as No Square Trio), presents their 5th album « C'est où Doregon? », the result of an intense collaboration between Swiss-French and Swiss-German musicians. The encounter of the talented trio (Michael Fleiner, André Hahne, Yannick Oppliger,) with the saxaphonist Daniel Küffer has proven so fruitful that the trio has become a quartet. Numerous concert tours (Germany, Switzerland, Uruguay, Argentina) have profoundly inspired No Square for the new compositions gathered on this album. The years of work, the friendship, and the complicity among these musicians can be felt in their music. With excellent solos, and a solid rythym, No Square is a very active & dynamic group on the Swiss & European scene. (Douglas Parsons)
Cadenez (USA) September 2003 CD "Cest où Doregon" No Square is a Swiss band made up of all new names to me, and they are firmly in the post-Bop camp. This is a fine record, played with fire and inspiration and it will repay many listens. Daniel Küffer has a big toned tenor sound, which he handles on most of the record. On two traks he switches to soprano and shows the same strong melodic sense. The 4tet is rhythmic in a late Bop way, and the compositions, by either bassist André Hahne or pianist Michael Fleiner, are consistently rich and interesting. Indeed, I'd say this 4tet is reminiscent of the Shorter Blue Note bands, but without sounding derivative or old fashioned in any way. Definitely worth checking out.
